Dynamic no fins (DNF) freediving is as much about technique and mental focus as it is about having the right equipment. Over time, I’ve honed my setup to ensure every dive is smooth, efficient, and enjoyable.

Here’s what works for me:

Perfect Weighting for Neutral Buoyancy

Achieving neutral buoyancy is critical for a seamless glide. For me, this means finding the correct weight and fine-tuning it with small adjustments. After experimenting, I decided to abandon the traditional weight belt - it created too many distractions, especially during turns. Instead, I use a neck weight, which stays securely in place, keeps me streamlined, and allows me to focus entirely on my technique.

To protect and prolong the life of my neck weight, I store it in a dedicated case. This keeps it safe from damage during transport and ensures it’s always in top condition for my training sessions. The case also makes it easy to carry and organize, saving me time and hassle at the pool.

A Reliable Noseclip

A good noseclip is an absolute game-changer. It seals off my nose effortlessly, so I can hold my breath longer without any discomfort. By eliminating the need to manage air pressure through my nose, I can direct my energy toward relaxation and improving my dive.

Bright, Clear Goggles

Visibility may not seem like a priority in DNF, but it helps more than you’d think. A pair of bright, clear goggles allows me to focus on the pool’s tiles, keeping my trajectory straight and my orientation consistent. Having this visual anchor boosts my confidence and lets me immerse myself fully in the rhythm of the dive.

The Comfort of a Good Wetsuit

The right wetsuit is often overlooked in pool training, but for me, it’s indispensable. A well-fitted wetsuit keeps me comfortable in the water for longer sessions and helps me glide with ease. It also reduces drag and lets me relax more fully, which is essential for maintaining calmness and efficiency during training.

Productive and Pleasant Training

With this simple yet effective setup - neck weight, noseclip, goggles, and a wetsuit - I’ve created a DNF system that works perfectly for me. It minimizes distractions, maximizes comfort, and allows me to focus on refining my technique.

That’s basically it! With these tools, my training sessions are not only productive but also incredibly enjoyable. If you’re building your DNF kit, I recommend starting simple and focusing on what makes you feel at ease in the water.

Happy diving, and may your dynamic no fins journey be as fantastic as mine!
