Pool trainings approach poll
Are you a self-guided freediver or do you work with a coach? After starting my journey to 150m DNF, I’ve been reflecting on my self-directed approach. Many people have followed my blog and journey, but I’ve also received comments suggesting I should hire a coach. It made me wonder—am I missing out by not working with one?

Few weeks ago, I created a poll to explore how others train.
Do most freedivers rely on a coach, or do they take a self-guided path like me?
Here’s what I learned so far:
- Over 50% of respondents train independently, but some seek guidance from a coach on an ad-hoc basis to overcome specific challenges.
- Group sessions and clubs are another approach I hadn’t considered—though less accessible in areas with smaller freediving communities.
- Coach driven trainings are less popular, but this could depend on the level of an individual.
This simple poll that I shared on Facebook, sparked deeper questions I’d love your help answering:
- Who are these freedivers and what is their performance level?
- Why do some freedivers choose to work with a coach?
- Why do so many freedivers prefer self-guided training?
- At what performance level should you start working with a coach?
- What challenges do self-guided freedivers face, and how do they overcome them?
- How do you choose the right coach—especially for remote sessions?
I know that at some point, I’ll need support—either through ad-hoc guidance or regular coaching. But understanding when and how to make that step is still unclear to me. That’s why I need your input!

This knowledge will help me—and others—better understand how to shape our training, when to seek guidance, and how to choose the right coach for our goals. Thank you for your input!
